Aromatherapy
Though it won’t directly decrease pain, it can make the birth experience much more pleasant—for everyone. Powered by essential oils, aromatherapy has been shown to alleviate stress and improve sleep quality9 in a range of different patients. The benefits also extend to nursing staff, who claim less stress and reduced fatigue and burnout when exposed to calming scents.10
Essential oils can be incorporated into a massage, misted on a pillow, or released over time with a diffuser. The top labor-recommended oils include lavender and geranium for relaxation; orange, chamomile, and mint for a lift; and clary sage to strengthen contractions.
As with all products during pregnancy, make sure the essential oils you choose are of high quality, and talk to your practitioner before you use them. And before you whip out your diffuser, make sure your hospital or birth center is okay with it in a prenatal appointment. If they are, don’t forget to pack it in your labor bag!
